Privacy Policy

Effective Date: October 9, 2026 Application: BookHaven E-Book Reader Architecture: 100% Offline-First
🛡️

100% Offline-First Guarantee

BookHaven never gathers, tracks, monitors, sells, or uploads personal reading data to remote servers. All your books, reading progress, notes, highlights, and vocabulary items exist solely inside your device's physical storage.

1. Introduction & Reading Privacy Ethos

Reading is a sanctuary of focus, personal thought, and intellectual growth. In an era where digital platforms track reading speed, dwell time, and user queries, BookHaven was created with an unwavering commitment: zero telemetry, zero cloud tracking, and complete reader privacy.

BookHaven operates as a self-contained, client-side personal reader. You do not need to register, create an account, provide an email address, or maintain an internet connection to enjoy your library.

2. Data Handling Summary

Question Disclosed Practice
Do we collect Personal Identifiable Information (PII)? NO. Zero name, email, phone, location, or credentials requested or stored.
Is an account or sign-up required? NO. Zero accounts, zero passwords, zero social login.
Do we store books on external servers? NO. All EPUB, PDF, and TXT files reside exclusively in your device's sandbox.
Do we track reading activity or telemetry? NO. Zero analytics SDKs, advertising frameworks, or session loggers.
How do optional AI features function? Client-Side BYOK. Requests use your own API key and connect directly to your chosen provider with zero BookHaven server proxy.

3. Information Stored Locally on Your Device

To provide offline reading functionality, BookHaven saves the following operational items solely on your physical device using SQLite (booknest_library.db) and operating system preferences:

  • Imported Book Files: EPUB, PDF, TXT, and HTML files stored in the application's local books/ directory.
  • Reading Progress & Offsets: Current reading page/percentage, scroll coordinates, and last-read timestamps.
  • Annotations & Notes: Color-coded text highlights, margin notes, tags, and optional audio voice notes stored in voice_notes/.
  • Vocabulary & Flashcards: Saved dictionary words and Spaced Repetition (SM-2) review schedules.
  • Reading Goals: Daily target minutes, streaks, and reading session logs.
  • Reader Preferences: Chosen font size, line height, margin width, and reading theme (Light, Dark, Sepia, AMOLED).

4. Optional Client-Side AI Features (Bring Your Own Key)

BookHaven includes optional AI-powered vocabulary lookups, chapter summaries, and conceptual explanations. These features strictly adhere to a Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) security model:

  • User-Supplied Keys: You provide your own personal API key for Google Gemini, OpenAI, or DeepSeek.
  • Secure Hardware Encryption: Your key is stored locally in device hardware secure storage (Android Keystore / iOS Keychain via flutter_secure_storage) and is never accessible to BookHaven developers.
  • Direct-to-Endpoint HTTPS: API requests execute directly between your device and the provider's official API server over encrypted HTTPS without passing through any intermediate proxy.
  • Explicit Confirmation: AI lookups are only triggered by explicit user action, with clear indicators that text is being submitted to the designated provider.

5. Device Permissions Notice

BookHaven requests minimal platform permissions strictly aligned with local application utilities:

  • Storage / Media: Required to allow you to select, import, and organize e-books from your device filesystem.
  • Microphone (Optional): Required solely if you tap to record audio voice memos in your book notes. Recorded voice memos remain strictly on your physical device.
  • Audio / TTS: Used to synthesize speech locally via your device's built-in Text-to-Speech engine.

6. India Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (DPDP Act)

Because BookHaven does not collect, receive, process, or store personal data on any remote server, the software operates in complete harmony with India's DPDP Act 2023 and the Information Technology Act, 2000. You remain the sole Data Principal with total custody and sovereignty over your device's data.

7. European Union & UK GDPR Compliance

BookHaven complies with the principles of data minimization and storage limitation under GDPR Articles 5, 15, 17, and 20:

  • Data Portability: You can export your complete library catalog, notes, and vocabulary in standard JSON format at any time in Settings.
  • Right to Erasure: Deleting a book or note immediately purges it from local storage. Clearing application data or uninstalling the app permanently erases all records.

8. United States CCPA / CPRA & COPPA Compliance

BookHaven does not sell, share, or monetize consumer personal information. The software contains zero tracking mechanisms and is fully compliant with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), making it safe for readers of all ages.

9. Data Retention & Permanent Deletion

Because BookHaven maintains no cloud infrastructure, we cannot access, restore, or modify your library:

  • Local Backups: Use Settings → Backup & Restore to export a portable .json backup file.
  • Permanent Deletion: You can delete any individual book or note directly in the interface. To perform a complete, permanent purge of all data, clear application storage in your operating system settings or uninstall BookHaven.
